About

On June 26, 2021, the Sandy Carter Charitable Foundation was formed and the IRS recognized it as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization on May 3, 2022.  The foundation is a modest, yet meaningful effort to honor and perpetuate Sandy’s loving and generous spirit.

The foundation seeks to continue interests and areas of concern to which Sandy devoted a great amount of time and energy during her lifetime:   1) enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities, 2) support San Francisco Bay Area residents in need, and 3) support preservation of the San Francisco Bay Area’s natural environment.  Our goal is to build an investment portfolio that will indefinitely support these interests and concerns.

We continue to search for opportunities to extend Sandy’s spirit of giving and kindness to those in need and welcome ideas, advice, and suggestions.

News

From our initial funding, we have established the Sandy Carter Fellowship at the USC Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy. Sandy graduated from USC in 1981 with a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy and spent her career serving children with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. The Sandy Carter Fellowship supports a doctoral student in their final year of study who is committed to pediatric occupational therapy. We are pleased to report a student was chosen this past year to receive the fellowship enabling her to complete her third year of study.  She passed her National Board Certification in Occupational Therapy and is currently enjoying her pediatric residency. We will be again contributing in 2024 to the Sandy Carter Fellowship at USC’s Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy

The foundation contributed to the Bay Area chapter of There With Care, a national organization that provides support to families and children facing critical illness.

Along with other donations, the Foundation also contributed The Redwood City Education Foundation. Their mission is to increase the academic performance of underserved K-8 public school students.

Also, thanks to the efforts of Sandy’s longtime friends, Carol Collins and the “Walkie Talkies”, a small memorial garden has been planted for the children at the 87th Street Early Learning Center in Daly City.
